Tioga Arts Council (TAC) is pleased to announce its June exhibition in the Main and Youth Galleries: “A Love Supreme: A Multimedia Exhibition”. This exhibition features artistic, poetic, and musical responses to John Coltrane’s masterpiece album, A Love Supreme. It opens on Friday, June 7, from 5 – 8 p.m. at 179 Front Street, Owego, NY 13827. At the opening, Pasquale Cangiano will do a live improvised piece of music titled: “Impressions of A Love Supreme.” Join us!
Overview
The idea for “A Love Supreme: A Multimedia Exhibition” stemmed from a conversation between Artist, Michael Husted, and Poet, Dr. Dante Di Stefano. Together, they conceived the idea for an exhibition – where artists and writers of all media – respond to music. Recorded 60 years ago, A Love Supreme was identified as the album that artists and creatives would response to. TAC received submissions from: 17 Artists, 8 Poets, and 2 Musicians.
About A Love Supreme
“I think the main thing a musician would like to do is give a picture to the listener of the many wonderful things that he knows of and senses in the universe.” − John Coltrane
“On Dec. 9 and 10, 1964, John Coltrane and his quartet recorded A Love Supreme. Widely considered to be one of the greatest jazz albums of all time, the 33-minute masterpiece is a four-part suite broken up into four tracks: “Acknowledgement,” “Resolution,” “Pursuance” and “Psalm.”
A Love Supreme was Coltrane’s musical declaration of spirituality and faith in a loving God who supported him as he battled drug addiction and other human failures years earlier. The album takes its name from the chant recorded as part of “Acknowledgement.”’ – Smithsonian Music, “A Love Supreme: Honoring John Coltrane During Jazz Appreciation Month 2014.”
